WBEZ seeks an outstanding News Host to guide listeners through a dynamic mix of daily news, interviews, and continuity to create Morning Edition for Chicago. Morning Edition sets the pace of the daily news conversation – who and what to pay attention to, and what’s at stake. On the radio and on Smart Speakers, our Anchor/Host is a trusted morning companion helping Chicagoans make sense of the news, and understand what happened while they we’re sleeping as they get ready for their day.
We’re looking for a News Host to create a morning listening experience that’s dynamic, companionable, and curious about the why of a story. The best candidate will know how to make an audience feel welcome, guide them through a busy morning, and ask direct questions on their behalf, they will do all that behind the mic, at live events, and actively on social media.
Ideally, you’re steeped in Chicago news and the issues and people at the heart of America’s third largest city - or naturally curious about the Midwest. You must be able to converse and conduct interviews on a wide range of topics, from politics, science and business, to arts and culture. The ideal candidate will have a thirst for knowledge, an insatiable curiosity, and delight in discovery. You can wake up in the dark, work with a team, and always hit a post. You’re expected to dig in, look for fresh angles on stories and ideas, and keep the morning moving. A great on-air laugh is a plus, as is the maturity and confidence to bring your full self to each conversation and break during this newscast.
You will work collaboratively with the Program Director, show producers, and editors, and the Managing Editor of News to craft a lively, informative and interactive daily program. You will be comfortable using prep from the production team to prepare daily newscasts, interviews and continuity, and being active on social media.
Side by side with the WBEZ newsroom, you will help set the tone for Morning Edition in Chicago, fostering an ambitious, supportive and collaborative dynamic on-air and off. You should be driven to deliver the best audio experience for our listeners and thrive in a team environment.
