 POSITION SUMMARY:  Promote the University’s reputation as a leader in the social sciences and related fields through proactive PR storytelling and other outreach, focused on story lines developed primarily within the School of Arts & Sciences and related centers, institutes and programs
Proactively pitch and place stories through strategic, targeted outreach to national, regional, trade and local media. Identify stories and other opportunities to promote messaging in support of the social sciences and related fields, write and produce text, multimedia and other content in support of strategic messaging points in these areas. Utilize university channels (Source/Newsroom, Record, social media, Web) to share content with campus and community audiences. (30%)
2. Identify and position thought leaders within respective areas to serve as media experts; produce content and supporting materials for use in pitches; pitch and place experts. Provide leadership, guidance and support for op-ed placement. (25%)
3. Provide strategic communications counsel to faculty, administrators and staff, and identify and facilitate opportunities for collaboration within Public Affairs. (25%)
4. Monitor and report media placements; contribute to overall media monitoring, reporting and measurement strategy. (15%)
5. Other duties in support of PR/media relations functions. (5%) 

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or related field
  • Academic background in sciences helpful
  • 5-7 years experience in public relations, media relations and/or strategic communications
  • Graduate degree in journalism, communications or related field
  • 6-10 years experience in public relations, media relations and/or strategic communications
  • Strong track record of success in developing media pitches and placing stories

 DECISION MAKING AND IMPACT: Will provide strategic consultation to campus partners to set PR priorities in order to leverage opportunities in the sciences to promote the university’s academic and research reputation. 
 CONTACTS: Internal: In addition to daily interactions with all facets of the Public Affairs team, the Senior News Director, Social Sciences, will be in contact with faculty, staff, students and administrators from across the Danforth Campus to ensure appropriate media coverage and other publicity for important announcements and events.
 External: The Senior News Director, Social Sciences, will interact with media and build important relationships with reporters, editors and producers on the regional, national and international level. He/she also will be in contact with outside individuals and organizations for story development and collaboration.
 Received: Supervisor meets regularly with employee, and interactions happen daily within team in order to share expertise and ensure consistency across the departmental function.
 CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION: This position will be exposed to sensitive university issues, including crisis management. Will have access to privileged information regarding campus partners’ strategic priorities and plans. 
 WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT: Office environment.  News directors may be called upon to respond to media queries or other events after hours.
