Job Description

WyoFile serves Wyoming’s civic life with community-supported, nonpartisan, public-interest journalism. To support that mission, we’re looking for a general assignment reporter with public safety and justice system reporting experience. What you’ll do:

  • Produce general assignment reporting that resonates with WyoFile readers.

  • Review court filings and law enforcement activity for daily story ideas.

  • Cover breaking news events from natural disasters to legal developments.

  • Be part of an “all-hands-on-deck” approach to state legislative coverage.

  • Contribute to the editorial process. Pitch story ideas and collaborate with editors and other reporters through all stages of story development.


Job Requirements

What you’ll need to succeed:

  • A magazine writer’s sense of narrative, a newspaper reporter’s sense of urgency and a nose for a good story. Knowledge of AP style.

  • Unimpeachable professional integrity, reliable sense of fairness and dogged commitment to journalism ethics.

  • Relentless curiosity, merciless critical thinking, a sharp eye for detail and the ability to synthesize complex information.

  • A willingness to ask difficult questions, report uncomfortable truths and dive deep.

  • The ability to work multiple developing stories simultaneously.

  • Team-centric approach and appreciation for collaboration.

We’re especially interested in candidates who:

  • Have experience reporting on criminal justice and the court system.

  • Who speak Spanish.

  • Have experience reporting in rural communities.

The details:

Start date: ASAP

Salary range: $60-72K, depending on experience

Reports to: Managing editor

Location: Wyoming — Lander, Laramie, Casper, Cheyenne or Jackson preferred, but other Wyoming communities considered. Depending on location, this role could be office-based, home-office-based or a hybrid.
